We're running a competition to find good examples of split ticketing. A lot is written about this but it's difficult to find examples where there is a significant saving.
We'll give you a free first class return journey on the best example that get's posted.

There are 3 types of UK train tickets available for your train journey. Like buying an airline ticket you normally find more restrictions the cheaper the ticket so check the details and decide which one best suits your travel requirements to guarantee the best savings:
Advance UK train fares are Single (one-way) tickets offering great value for money on many longer distance journeys. You must book in advance and fares are subject to availability. The earlier you book the better the deal. You can mix and match Advance UK train fares for a return journey. Advance UK train fares are only valid for the date and train shown and are non-refundable.You can change time or date of travel before departure of the first reserved train but you will need to pay any difference in fare and an administration fee.
Off-Peak UK train fares are cheaper tickets for travelling on trains that are less busy. Offering good value for money, these tickets may require you to travel at specific times of day, days of the week or on a specific route. Where there is more than one Off-Peak UK train fare for a journey, the cheaper fare with more restrictions will be called Super Off-Peak. You can buy Off-Peak UK train tickets any time before you travel. The travel restrictions for your Off-Peak UK train ticket will depend on the journey you are making and will be advised when you buy your ticket.
Anytime UK train fares are fully flexible tickets, with no time restrictions on when you can travel. Perfect for people who need complete flexibility. You can buy Anytime UK train tickets any time before you travel and you can use your ticket to travel on any train. With an Anytime UK train ticket you can also break your journey at stations along the route of travel.

Heathrow - there is a cheaper but slower way to get to Heathrow than by using the Heathrow Express. You have to buy 2 tickets, one from Paddington to Hayes & Harlington and then Hayes & harlington to Heathrow Connect.

i am not sure where to turn but it seems more and more train companies in the UK are inflating their prices, reducing their services and generally giving us the cosumer a rough ride so to speak, who governs this sort of thing and why cant we have more say in what the train companies do, sorry a rant after a 2 hour delay getting to portsmouth

i am sure you are all aware of the intensity of carbon emissions not only for individuals but companies as well.

when purchasing your rail travel make sure you get the correct type of fare which can save you time and money with a ticket including the underground element. For example, you get a ticket from Richmond to Leeds which means you need to change at Victoria Station to Kings Cross. by purchasing a ticket with the underground travel element included you can simply pass through the turnstiles and proceed to your next station

The journeys and prices raileasy.co.uk display are for the fastest, most direct services. Most people want to get to their destination as quickly as possible. However, if journey time is of no concern to you, please check prices for overtaken trains. You can do this by clicking on the link on the right hand side of the fares screen.
A good example of this is trains to Heathrow, please check our “Airport” section for more details.

If you don’t have a Family Railcard, some Train Operating Companies (TOCs) offer what are known as “Kids For a Quid” promotions.
To get these fares, you have to do a separate booking for the children. On the booking engine, enter 0 (zero) for the number of adults and then however many children you want to book for.
It’s worthwhile checking it first to make sure the route you are travelling on has these promotional fares.
